Our society

Increasing interest in genealogy during recent decades resulted in 1987 in the founding of the Netherlands Society for Jewish Genealogy, which in its 20th anniversary year (celebrated with a symposium in Amsterdam ) has about 500 members.

The society's main goals and activities are:

- interchange of genealogical data about Jewish families having lived, or now living, in the Netherlands;

- development of knowledge concerning available sources for research on Jewish families;

- publication of a quarterly periodical in the Dutch language;

- arranging meetings and lectures;

- stimulation of genealogical research with regard to Jewish families in the Netherlands and their ancestors from other countries;

- study - in the framework of genealogical research - of the position of Jews in the Netherlands in various regions throughout the ages.

The first objective is pursued by means of

1) the annual publication of a Family Register containing the names of those families for which the society's members possess genealogical data - an important stimulus for members to contact each other for additional research and interchange of data, and

2) the quarterly question-and-answer feature in the periodical Misjpoge and on the Forum on this site

Our periodical

The title of our society's magazine is Misjpoge, which is Dutch-Yiddish for Mishpacha, this means family.  It is published (in Dutch with an English language summary) on a quarterly basis.

A much used and highly appreciated feature of Misjpoge is the question-and-answer section. On our web site we will publish the questions and answers that appeared in the latest issue. If you wish to publish a question or contribute an answer, please send it to forum@nljewgen.org . Remember to put the name you are asking about in the subject of your email.

Please note that the Society cannot carry out research, even for its own members. We assume that you are familiar with genealogical research procedures, and what we publish is intended to help those who are already involved in such research.
